This singing group started many years ago when my son David wrote a pantomime and asked if I could find any ladies who would be prepared to sing in the panto. It sort of grew from there because those who had ‘volunteered’ wanted to keep singing as they had so enjoyed themselves.
We were invited to sing at Langley WI for their Christmas party and that was our first gig. From there our popularity grew and we were suddenly asked to Chapel harvest festivals and anniversaries all over the district. We started to add a couple of poems and humorous monologues to our repertoire, and found we had a Joyce Grenfell and Gervais Finn reader in our midst – the funny tales go down very well!
The late Denise Baxter would perform poems she had written; she wrote a very funny take on the WI!
We have performed as far west as Hallbank Gate, taking in Newbrough WI, Fourstones Methodist Chapel, Haydon Bridge Chapel, Haltwhistle Wives Club and the St Mary’s annnual pensioners’ Christmas Party.
The last harvest festivals at Ryal and Whitehall Chapels, just before they closed, were sad occasions
We have performed at Langley for the WI and Chapel, Snods Edge, Slaley, Ponteland, Mickley, Barrasford, Wall, Whitely Shield, Corbridge and Heddon, with our furthest east booking being at Blucher.
We will be appearing at Mickley Chapel, Dilston WI and Warden in the near future.
We are twelve happy singers at the moment, with hopefully two returning members coming back in time for Christmas bookings.
We are always keen to welcome new members, so if you would like to join our tuneful band please
